It’s an easy drive to Pauanui from Tairua. Only 20-25 minutes. Of course, you could take the scenic route and catch the ferry across the Tairua River.
The town of Pauanui, meaning ‘Big Paua’ in Maori, is a popular beach settlement boasting a three-kilometre beach. It has a gentle gradient making it relatively safe for swimming. Depending on the direction of the wind, Pauanui can also be great for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Other activities we recommend to do whilst visiting Pauanui include cycling, walking or running the Tairua-Pauanui Trail, climb the majestic mountain for the incredible views it offers, play a round of golf on one of their three courses, relax on the beach with a good book or spend some time exploring what the Pauanui Centre has to offer.
